Every plastic surgeon has a particular focus. What is yours?
My practice focus is on patient satisfaction optimizing safety and comfort as well as consistent, beautiful results. Perhaps that’s why I have such a strong referral practice and patients who return for additional procedures.
My clinical focus includes: reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery, including breast augmentation, breast lift procedures and breast reduction; cosmetic body contouring, including tummy tucks, liposuction and contouring after massive weight loss; and surgical facial rejuvenation, including short-scar face lifts, eyelid rejuvenation and Asian/ethnic cosmetic surgery.
My staff and I also perform a wide range of non-surgical cosmetic procedures, including Botox®, injectable fillers (Restylane®, Juvederm™, and fat grafts), chemical peels, laser hair removal, and skin treatments using the Obagi® System.

What is most important to you during a consultation with a new patient?
My patients regularly comment that I spend much more time with them than most other cosmetic surgeons. An initial consultation with me is the opportunity for me to educate a patient about their options. I want them to be fully informed and get all their questions and concerns answered. Cosmetic surgery is an important step in anyone’s life. I want all my patients to have a comprehensive understanding of their options and to be confident about their choices.

Where did you get your education and training?
I graduated Magna Cum Laude with High Honors from Princeton University and received my M.D. and Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degrees from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Mass.
As for training, I completed my general surgery training at the George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and my training in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery at the prestigious Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, division of Plastic Surgery, Baylor College of Medicine.

You are an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Medical Association. Why does this matter to your patients?
I consider myself an advocate for patients and other dedicated physicians. There are issues on the table, like insurance coverage and access to care that require hands-on attention. As Director of the Center of Advanced Breast Restoration, I have witnessed first-hand insurance companies trying to deny patients access to even reconstructive procedures after breast cancer. Simply put – this is not OK! Being actively involved in advocating for my patients allows me to serve my community to help represent the voice of patients in this ever-evolving American health care system. Being in a leadership position gives me the opportunity to make a difference that is tangible to my patients.

You often speak to your peers. Where have you been a presenter?
As an academic plastic surgeon with a commitment to scientific based outcomes, I have had the opportunity to share my clinical research and ideas at prominent medical organizations for plastic and reconstructive surgeons, including the Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Safety is a major issue for you. How does this impact the work you do?
As board-certified plastic surgeons, we are physicians above all else and must do everything possible to ensure a patient’s good health. My medical research focuses on analyzing outcomes in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery - both clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. I know I say it a lot, but nothing matters more than patient safety.
Most recently, I served as editor of a special patient safety issue of Seminars of Plastic Surgery titled “Optimization of Patient Safety in Cosmetic Surgery.” I am also the principal investigator in a large multi-institutional study focused on outcomes in breast reconstruction and continue to explore and scientifically evaluate new methods to improve outcomes in cosmetic plastic surgery.

You have achieved many honors from leading medical associations. What are they?
I’m very proud to have received honors from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Texas Society of Plastic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Association for Academic Surgery, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. I was named one of Houston’s Top Doctors in 2007 and 2008 by H Texas Magazine and Houston’s Top doctors for Women in 2007.
It has been particularly gratifying to be one of the few plastic surgeons nationally to receive the 2008 American Medical Association Foundation Leadership in Medicine Award for my work in Houston and in Washington, DC advocating for patient rights.

Why have you gone into private practice after years as an assistant professor in the plastic surgery division of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine?
After serving as chief resident in plastic surgery, I was recruited by Baylor College of Medicine to help develop their first program in cosmetic plastic surgery through the new Center for Aesthetic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. After rapidly building a robust practice in the medical center and the suburbs of Houston, I developed Basu Plastic Surgery and The Center for Advanced Breast Restoration to provide more personalized, private care in a beautiful, relaxing environment of my own creation. In addition, I can now see and treat patients in convenient locations closer to home in addition to our Texas Medical Center location: The Woodlands, and NW Houston/Cypress areas.

How do you choose members of your staff?
I look for people skills, first and foremost, because I insist that our patients be treated with the utmost care, respect and compassion. I can train staff members on our systems and methods but sensitivity, the ability to connect with people, integrity and loyalty cannot be taught.

What advice do you have for someone contemplating plastic surgery?
I’d tell them to meet with more than one surgeon so they’re confident they’ve made the right choice. Look for board-certification, beautiful results in the before & after photos, and that indefinable connection and confidence that they should feel with their surgeon. Surgery is a process from pre-op to post-op and beyond. That’s why the relationship matters.

Breast Augmentation
Breast implant surgery is very popular among women in Houston, and for a good reason. Breast enlargement adds volume to your breasts and improves breast shape and profile. Many women feel that larger breasts help balance their bodies’ overall appearance, giving the top and bottom better symmetry and a more natural and feminine look.
If you are unhappy with the size and shape of your breasts, then breast enlargement plastic surgery in Houston can give you larger, fuller, sexier breasts. The biggest complain most women have after breast implant surgery is that they did not get breast implants sooner. After breast implant surgery, most women feel better about their bodies and more confident. Our Houston patients find that they look better both in and out of clothes, and shopping for new clothes and bras can be very exciting and satisfying.
Women in Houston have breast augmentation for many different reasons, including:
- Breasts have lost volume and begun to sag over time
- Breasts have always been small
- Breasts look too small in proportion to the rest of a woman’s body
- Breasts have lost volume after pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Weight gain in other parts of the body, giving an uneven appearance
- Asymmetrical breasts (one breast is larger than the other)
- Clothes do not fit properly
- Breasts do not fill out bras
- Lack of cleavage
- Desire to feel sexy and more feminine
- Improved self esteem and confidence
Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Basu will discuss your concerns with you and explain the details of breast enlargement cosmetic surgery. There are a number of options to consider, including breast implant type (saline or silicone gel breast implants), breast implant size and profile, implant texture, and breast implant surgical method. Breast Lift
There are a number of breast surgery options available in Houston, but sometimes all that is needed is a breast lift. Breast lift plastic surgery can improve the profile of sagging breasts, making breasts look more youthful and perky.
Breast lift can be combined with breast implant surgery if your breasts have lost volume in addition to becoming saggy. This condition is common after pregnancy and breastfeeding, but can also result from aging. Many women simply want their breasts to look the way they did when they were younger or before they had children, and breast lift with or without implants can create a more youthful appearance.
For women with uncomfortably large breasts who are considering breast reduction, a breast lift may be included to improve profile as well as reduce size of the breasts.
Women in Houston have breast lift for many different reasons, including:
- Breasts have begun to sag over time
- Breasts have become droopy after pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Clothes do not fit properly
- Bras are uncomfortable
- Lack of cleavage
- Desire for perkier breasts
- Desire for better breast contour and profile
- Desire to feel sexy and more feminine
- Improved self esteem and confidence
Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Basu will discuss your concerns with you and explain the details of breast lift cosmetic surgery. There are a number of options to consider, including whether or not another breast procedure should be performed at the same time. He will work with you to determine a surgical plan that best suits your needs to create the results that you hope for.

Tummy Tuck
Tummy tuck (also called abdominoplasty) is a very popular cosmetic surgery procedure in Houston. Both men and women in Houston are finding that tummy tuck can be an effective tool for shaping and sculpting the body for better body appearance and improved self esteem.
Sometimes no amount of diet and exercise can create a flat tummy. Tummy tuck plastic surgery actually tightens abdominal muscles and removes excess fat and skin from the stomach area to create a tighter, slimmer, smoother belly. If, like many other Houston patients, you are interested in an overall body rejuvenation, tummy tuck can be combined with other procedures such as liposuction or breast implants for a sexier look.
Patients in Houston choose abdominoplasty cosmetic surgery for a number of reasons, including:
- Excess abdominal skin following weight loss
- Weight gain (beer belly or spare tire) from a sedentary lifestyle
- Abdominal fat that is resistant to diet and exercise
- Stretched stomach muscles from pregnancy
- Desire for a thinner profile
- Desire to look younger and fitter
- Desire to fit into clothes better
Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Basu will discuss your concerns with you and explain the details of tummy tuck cosmetic surgery. There are a number of options to consider, including whether or not another body procedure, such as liposuction or breast enlargement, should be performed at the same time. He will work with you to determine a surgical plan that best suits your needs to create the results that you hope for.

Liposuction
Liposuction (also called liposculpture) is a very popular cosmetic surgery procedure in Houston. Both men and women in Houston are finding that liposuction can be an effective tool for shaping and sculpting their bodies for better body appearance and improved self esteem.
Liposuction can be used to fine-tune the body, removing fat from localized areas that are resistant to diet and exercise. Houston cosmetic surgeon performs liposuction on many parts of the body, including the buttocks, thighs, legs, arms, back, hips, and tummy or abdominal area. Liposuction can also be used on the neck for reducing fat on the neck and around the face, creating a more fit and younger appearance.
Unlike dieting, fat removal through liposuction is permanent because it actually removes fat cells from the body.
Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Basu will discuss your concerns with you and explain the details of liposuction cosmetic surgery. There are a number of options to consider, including whether or not another body procedure should be performed at the same time. He will work with you to determine a surgical plan that best suits your needs to create the results that you hope for.

Body Contouring
If you are a patient in Houston who has lost a lot of weight from dieting, exercise, or bariatric surgery (gastric bypass surgery), then you are probably wondering how to get the slim body that you hoped for. Now that the weight and fat are gone, you may have excess skin that needs to be removed before your look can be completed.
Excess skin must be surgically removed through body contouring plastic surgery. Houston cosmetic surgeon Dr. Basu is experienced with removing excess skin and fat after weight loss to create a natural look. After body contouring plastic surgery, you will have a slimmer profile and clothes will fit better.
Although body contouring surgery will create scars, Houston cosmetic surgeon Dr. Basu takes care to place scars where they are inconspicuous, and if treated correctly, the scars will fade with time. Most gastric bypass patients in Houston find that scarring is a small price to pay for tighter skin and better body shape and contour.
Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Basu will discuss your concerns with you and explain the details of plastic surgery following massive weight loss. There are a number of options to consider, including which plastic surgery procedures are needed to achieve your desired results. He will work with you to determine a surgical plan that best suits your needs to create the results that you hope for.
