Breast Augmentation

If you have been considering breast augmentation, the most important decision you will make is your choice of plastic surgeon. The information provided here is designed to arm you with all of the information you will need to make an informed choice.

Breast augmentation has been chosen by over two million women to increase breast size and improve breast shape, or to restore breast volume lost by pregnancy and aging. In breast augmentation, a small incision is placed in a hidden area and the implant is placed behind the breast, typically under the muscle. In a recent announcement, the FDA approved silicone gel implants (click to learn more about FDA approval) so that now women can choose between silicone gel and saline implants. In the past, the typical recovery was one to two weeks, but Dr. Fata has introduced a “24 Hour Recovery Program for Breast Augmentation” (click to learn more about this quick recovery program). Dr. Fata is one of the few plastic surgeons in the Midwest to offer a “24 Hour Recovery Program,” which has allowed women to resume their normal activities, such as work and child care by the second day after surgery. A soft bra is worn for comfort and the only restrictions are to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting during the first week.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction addresses a very serious medical problem. Many large-breasted women experience back, neck, and shoulder pain because of the weight of their breasts. Others complain that they cannot exercise or participate in sports because of the weight and bulk of their breasts.

Some women just feel self-conscious and have become the unwanted targets of insensitive jokes. Whatever the reason, breast reduction offers a reliable method to reduce the size and weight of your breasts and simultaneously improve your shape. Breast reduction surgery techniques are used that will give you the most natural shape and relieve the symptoms you may have experienced. At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, we count women who have had breast reduction among our happiest patients because not only do they look better but, more importantly, they feel better!

In many cases, medical insurance will cover most of the cost of breast reduction. However, individual insurance plans vary and most of them will require a recommendation from your primary care physician and a trial of "conservative" therapy, such as exercise or weight loss, before they will approve breast reduction.

Breast Lift

As we age, all areas of our body gradually sag and droop, and the breasts are no exception. The condition of sagging breasts, known as ptosis, may be accelerated by pregnancy, breast feeding and weight loss. Fortunately, the procedure of a breast lift, or mastopexy, can restore your breasts to a more vibrant and youthful shape.

A breast lift (Mastopexy) involves moving the nipple and breast tissue to a higher level on your chest so that the nipple will lie at the level of the breast fold, a position considered to be ideal based on measurements taken from models. The skin below the nipple is then tightened and contoured to your new shape. A breast lift can be done with or without a breast implant for breast enlargement, a decision that will be based on your personal goals and the amount of available breast tissue.

At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, Dr. Fata is one of the few plastic surgeons in Indiana to offer the vertical, or short scar, breast lift. In this procedure, much of the loose skin on the lower portion of the breast is tightened rather than removed. This approach eliminates the long scar in the breast fold and achieves a natural, youthful shape.

Liposuction

Liposuction is far and away the most popular cosmetic procedure, and it has achieved this level of popularity because it works. If you have areas of excess fat that won't respond to diet and exercise, then liposuction is the only method that can actually reduce the size of a particular area of your body ("spot reduction"). These areas of excess fat tend to be localized around the hips and thighs in women while men typically complain about difficulty in managing their waistline.

Liposuction works because it not only removes the unwanted fat, but it also removes the cells that store the fat. The advantage of removing fat cells is that if you maintain your current weight and level of exercise, there is no reason to expect that you will re-accumulate fat in these troublesome areas. Liposuction is performed by passing a hollow metal instrument called a cannula through a small, hidden incision. The cannula is attached to a machine that creates a negative pressure to remove the fat. After liposuction, a compression garment or a girdle is worn for 3 - 4 weeks to minimize swelling and to help your skin tighten around your new, slimmer figure. How quickly you are able to resume normal activities will of course depend on the amount of liposuction that is performed.

Since the advent of liposuction, there have been two innovations which have greatly improved results: the tumescent, or "wet", technique and ultrasonic liposuction. The tumescent liposuction technique is the injection of a saline solution containing a local anesthetic and epinephrine (adrenaline) just prior to performing liposuction. This method expands the fat layer for easier removal, decreases the amount of swelling and bruising, and also allows some cases of liposuction to be performed under local anesthesia.

Ultrasonic liposuction (or Ultrasound Assisted Lipoplasty - UAL) is a new technique in which a specialized liposuction cannula emits high frequency sound waves to liquefy the fat before it is removed. This technique has changed liposuction into a finesse procedure because the fat can be removed with greater precision and less trauma. Ultrasonic liposuction has also improved the results in certain areas, such as the back, upper abdomen and breast, which had previously been resistant to traditional liposuction because of the high concentration of fibrous connective tissue.

After a comprehensive examination, Dr. Fata will discuss the various options for liposuction and he will recommend a treatment plan based on your own body type and your individual goals. Please remember that while liposuction can recontour and improve the shape in certain areas of your body, it is not a tool for weight loss and is not recommended for severely overweight individuals.

Tummy Tuck

Maybe you once had a tight, "washboard" abdomen, but ever since your last pregnancy you just can't get your old shape back. Or maybe you've always had a soft, prominent "belly" that you could only dream would go away. Fortunately, a procedure known as an abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, can remove excess folds of skin and tighten your abdominal muscles to create a lean, flat, and more well defined abdomen.

In a tummy tuck, a "bikini line" incision is made, excess skin and fat are removed, and your abdominal muscles are tightened to flatten out the bulge. If your abdominal fullness and loose skin are confined to the area below the belly button, you may be a candidate for a "mini" abdominoplasty, which has a shorter incision and limits the tightening to the lower abdomen. However, if the fullness and skin laxity involve your entire abdomen, then you would likely need a full abdominoplasty to get the best result. After a tummy tuck, a compression garment or a girdle is worn for 4 - 6 weeks as normal activities are gradually resumed. Heavy lifting or any other activity which would strain the abdominal muscles repaired by a tummy tuck is restricted for 6 weeks. Dr. Fata has used his personal technique of abdominoplasty(tummy tuck) to give many women a flat, sculpted, and more athletic appearing abdomen. It is a very safe and predictable technique, and it has become one of our most popular procedures.

Rhinoplasty

The nose is the most prominent feature on the face. If your nose is too big or too small, it deprives your face of a natural balance and harmony. If you are one of the many people who have gone through life self-conscious about the appearance of your nose, then you will find that a rhinoplasty offers you a solution. A rhinoplasty is a procedure in which the nasal bones and cartilage are reshaped into a more pleasing and graceful contour that will compliment your other facial features. Cosmetic rhinoplasty can be performed by placing incisions inside the nose which are hidden from view. Some bruising and swelling are expected for the first two weeks, but most of our patients are surprised that they experienced much less discomfort than they had anticipated. An external dressing is worn the first week after rhinoplasty and when it is removed, makeup can usually be applied. Over the next several months after rhinoplasty, there will be a subtle but ongoing remodeling process as your nose continues to become more sculpted and refined.

At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, a rhinoplasty is not a "one size fits all" procedure. Your rhinoplasty will be planned and tailored to match your individual needs so that you can achieve the most natural appearance. After rhinoplasty surgery, many patients have shed their self-conscious image and discovered a new sense of confidence. Perhaps the most common question patients ask themselves after surgery is "Why did I wait so long?"

Facelift

You may think, as many people do, that you look older than you feel. Comments such as "you look tired" or "did you get enough sleep" serve as constant reminders that the youthful and vibrant appearance that you once took for granted has begun to fade. A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a very effective procedure designed to reduce the signs of aging and rejuvenate your natural beauty.

The goal of a facelift is to lift and tighten the sagging skin and muscles of your face and neck. These improvements are achieved by first placing skin incisions hidden around the ear and hairline. The skin and facial muscles are then lifted and tightened to restore the natural contours around your facial skeleton that contribute to a youthful appearance. Excess skin can be removed around the incision lines as needed to help smooth out your facial skin. The incisions typically heal as inconspicuous, hairline scars.

A facelift will result in some swelling and bruising, most of which will have resolved within two weeks. Most of our patients feel confident going out in public within ten days. Some discomfort is expected for the first 48 hours, but significant pain is uncommon. Although a facelift cannot stop the aging process, it can effectively "set back the clock" and give you a renewed sense of confidence and vitality.

Blepharoplasty

Often the skin around your eyes is the first place to show signs of aging. The eyes have been described as "windows to the soul" and increasingly greater emphasis has been placed on eyelids as a central feature of the face. Even small imperfections, such as wrinkles, loose skin, or "bags" under the eyes, can give an impression of being tired, weary, or displeased. A blepharoplasty (or eyelid surgery) is a procedure in which excess skin and protruding pockets of fat are removed to restore a more youthful appearance. In a blepharoplasty, incisions can be hidden in the upper eyelid crease and inside the lower eyelid(the "transconjunctival blepharoplasty"). A blepharoplasty typically is associated with only minimal discomfort. After eyelid surgery, some swelling and bruising is expected, but it can be diminished by using ice packs and typically most of it will have resolved within two weeks. A blepharoplasty can give your eyes a vibrant, alert, and refreshed appearance that will make you look as good as you feel.

Which procedure will give me the results I am looking for?

There are many factors to consider when choosing the right cosmetic procedure for you. Once your doctor has completed a thorough medical history and examination, a recommendation can be made based on individual factors, such as your skin and body type, general health, and your own personal goals.

How can you guarantee the results?

No surgeon can guarantee a result because each patient is unique and certain factors, such as the rate of healing, will vary among patients. However, your plastic surgeon should be able to communicate his expectation of your result based on his past experience using former patients as examples.

Will I be able to afford plastic surgery?

Many practices offer financing options for cosmetic surgery. At Renaissance Plastic Surgery, we will work with you to develop an affordable financing plan. Keep in mind that there are several additional costs beyond the surgeon's fee: anesthesia costs, surgery center facility fees, and the cost of any implants or special medications.

Is plastic surgery painful?

The discomfort of plastic surgery varies with the procedure and with each patient. Most skin treatment and facial refinement procedures result in minimal discomfort. The discomfort associated with body contouring procedures, such as breast enlargement, liposuction and tummy tucks, is typically greatly diminished in 48 hours. During that time, the level of discomfort is minimized through prescription pain medication and proper post-operative care.

How much recovery time will I need?

Recovery from cosmetic surgery will vary with the procedure and the patient. For patients undergoing extensive body contouring procedures or major facial surgery, such as a face lift, we generally recommend that you take off one week from work to allow you to rest properly and to minimize swelling and bruising. You can then gradually resume your normal activities over the next 3 to 4 weeks, but we would recommend that you restrict strenuous exercise and heavy lifting during that time. Although you may be tempted by doctors who tell you that you can "get right back to work", please remember that you have made a major emotional (and financial) investment by undergoing cosmetic surgery. You owe it to yourself to allow enough time to ensure a smooth and uneventful recovery.
