Moving from Saline to Silicone – Why some women are considering the upgrade

The numbers are in, between 2007 and 2008 the percentage of  women choosing silicone implants over saline implants has increased by 1/3.  Full FDA approval was not available for Silicone implants until 2006. The women that underwent breast augmentation pre-FDA approval of Silicone, were left with no choices other than Saline. Luckily, those women aren’t stuck and the upgrade is fairly easy.

As noted at americanhealthandbeauty.com, the transition to silicone after having saline is made easier since the pocket for the implant already exists. In most cases, the implant swap can be completed in less than an hour and patients are able to return to work the next day. As with any procedure, individual results vary and consultation with your cosmetic surgeon are necessary to determine the best plan for your implant upgrade.

Saline implants were the only option for women 5 years ago. While some were pleased with their results, others were left with a “rippled” look and dissatisfied with the “water balloon” feel. The Silicone implant gives these women an option of keep their implants but improve the effect. The new Silicone implants are described as being more realistic, feeling more like natural breast tissue.

The concerns of pre-1990 silicone implants was the safety of the implant and the possibility of silicone leaking into the body. The new silicone implants have the consistency of a jelly bean and are much less likely to rupture and were designed not to “leak”. The warranty of saline implants should cover the upgrade to the new silicone implants should your old saline implant rupture. Even without the warranty, the cost of the upgrade may be less than you imagine.

If you are unhappy with your saline implants, it may  be worth a consultation with your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to discuss your individual options. Let Breast Implants USA help you find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with experience in breast implant upgrades.

Silicone Breast Implants Milestone a Boon for Breast Augmentation Patients

Breast augmentation patients have reason to celebrate today, as they have just passed the three year anniversary of the FDA approval of silicone-gel breast implants. With improved technology aiding the process, the popularity of silicone breast implants is sure to rise, as surgeons become more skilled and knowledgeable about conducting the various procedures. Until liquid-silicone-filled implants appeared in the 1960s, women’s only breast implant options were saline implants filled with a sterile saltwater solution, which tended to slosh around and ripple. Thus for many surgeons, after extensive research, the 2006 approval of silicone-gel implants into their safety meant a large step forward in the options for both patients and surgeons.

According to Dr. Stoker of Marina Plastic Surgery Associates, the silicone implants have already made vast improvements, “The cohesive gel is a bit firmer, so it has a dense, much softer feel. It looks and feels much more like natural tissue,” states Dr. Stoker. “Also, in the event of a rupture, the cohesive gel won’t leak. Rupture is very rare, but this aspect of these implants is very reassuring.” For those considering breast augmentation surgery, there is no better time then now to make the decision. With increased safetly smoothing the process, women now have the ability to achieve the appearance they truly desire.

Silicone Breast Implants On The Rise

According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the percentage of women choosing silicone gel breast implants over saline implants increased by one-third from 2007 to 2008. Many women say that silicone gel implants feel more natural than their saline counter parts.

Until the FDA approved the new silicone gel implants, women having breast augmentation surgery had only one choice: saline implants,” Approved in 2006, today’s silicone gel implants are equipped to protect against leaking. Many patients today are opting to upgrade their saline implants, to silicone ones to regain a natural feeling to their breast.

Fraudulent: Texas Woman Uses Breast Cancer Fund to Pay For Breast Implants

An interesting tale of deceit, that has ended in embarrassment for the culprit. Waco Texas has seen a bit of fraud lately in relation to breast augmentation, as a woman recently falsified her need for breast implants in order to raise money. The unbelievable story is stranger than fiction.

Earlier this month, a young woman was been charged with stealing money that was originally supposed to go to her breast cancer fund. Trista Joy Lathern, 24, took thousands of dollars from individuals who thought they were giving to a charitable fund. However, there’s more. Lathern never had breast cancer in the first place. Still, she allegedly played the hoax to the max. The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office stated Lathern even atttemped to shave her head, and then held a fundraiser for herself that was attended by dozens of friends and neighbors, and raised over $10,000 for the treatment. Arrested on Wednesday, Lathern was charged with “theft by deception over $1,500, but under $20,000.”

Liposuction: The Next Step For Breast Augmentation?

1With breast implant surgery on the rise, it has become more and more important to find alternative methods to perform various breast augmentation surgeries. The practice of breast augmentation has been available in the United States for over 40 years. During breast augmentation, implants are inserted through an incision usually made just above the breast crease, and are placed into a “pocket” created by the surgeon behind the breast tissue or the chest muscle to add volume and enhance shape to small or underdeveloped breasts. (Breast Implant Safety) Luis Zapiach, a plastic surgeon in Hackensack has recently stated that excess fat tissue from liposuction patients, can in fact be used for breast augmentation surgeries. Zapiach explained that, “all of the breast tissue is removed before the fat is injected, so there is no danger that fat – which excretes estrogen, a hormone that stimulates breast cell growth, will bring the cancer back.” (ABC News)

The current study performed by Zapiach used 50 women who had their liposuctioned fat used for breast augmentation. X-rays were used to look for dead tissue and breast cancer 3 to 12 months after the operation. One key element to the study featured the use of a bra-like device Zapiach invented called the Brava. The device includes a small battery-operated pump that creates suction on the breast. That, in turn, increases volume and promotes the growth of blood vessels in the area.

This is great news for surgeons who now have an alternative method to perform their surgeries. Theoretically, there is still a risk that the use of fat for augmentations could increase the risk of breast cancer, Zapiach stated, but it is evident that this new break through will help to advance the practice of breast augmentation.
