In order for a plastic surgeon to become board certified, they have to go through a long, demanding process. It is not something that can be purchased. It is not a 6-month long process; it is a process that takes years. That is why there are so many more plastic surgeons that are not board certified.

Plastic Surgeon's willing to invest that amount of time, studying and studying more, and on top of that passing the tests, and then following the comprehensive rules set forward, in our opinion, deserve the respect that brings.

How long do implants last?

It is not known how long implants will last. In the body, the wall of the implant may weaken and become disrupted. This is more likely when there is an impact injury, such as from the steering wheel of a car or fall. The implant may or may not last a lifetime and depends upon the manufacturing process and other, as yet, unknown factors.

What causes breast implants to rupture?

The truth is, there are a lot of reasons why breast implants might rupture and not all have been documented. However the FDA has gathered some solid ideas of what causes ruptures to breast implants.

Breast implants can rupture from damage during implantation or during other surgical procedures. When the implant shell folds or wrinkles or there is trauma or other excessive forces to the chest, it can cause the implants to rupture as well. Compression of the breast during mammography has also been known to lead to ruptures.

Smooth Implants vs. Textured Implants

The smooth surface implant requires a large pocket and is associated with a 10% incidence of capsule contracture (tightening of the scar around the implant causing firmness or hardness). The smooth implant has only an occasional occurrence of rippling or wrinkling which gives the overlying skin a wavy appearance.

A textured (roughened surface) implant is associated with a 3% incidence of capsule contracture but has a 7-9% occurrence of rippling.
