Breast Implants Most Popular Cosmetic Surgery in U.S.
For a long time, Plastic Surgery was seen as something available only to celebrities and the 'privileged few' who could afford the time and money required for such elective surgery. Times have changed, and so have attitudes towards Plastic Surgery. More and more women and men are looking to surgically enhance their appearance through cosmetic surgery and non-surgical treatments.
Recently, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons released a study showing that Plastic Surgery is on the rise in the United States and the most popular Plastic Surgery procedure performed is Breast Augmentation surgery.
That's right, Breast Implants surgery has become the most performed cosmetic surgery procedure in the United States with more than 307,000 Breast Implants surgeries performed last year.
Here are the top 5 most popular Plastic Surgery procedures of 2008, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS):
Breast Augmentation - 307,000
Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) - 279,000
Liposuction - 245,000
Eyelid Surgery - 221,000
Tummy Tuck - 122,000

Those Plastic Surgeons who are Board Certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery have undergone strenuous and demanding training, and are required to have at least three years of general surgery experience before they enter the process to become Board Certified. Working with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon ensures that your surgeon reflects the high standards of quality and experience required of those who are at the top of their field. Safety and quality are always the top priorities of Board Certified Plastic Surgeons and their work reflects that commitment.
There are many ways to know if your doctor is Board Certified:
- The direct approach. To find out if a doctor is board certified, check the American Board of Plastic Surgery site where you can directly search for your doctor's certification.
- Identifying logos and organizations. In most cases when a doctor is associated with certain groups, such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), these organizations require their members to be board certified. So a member of the ASPS or ASAPS means they are board certified.
- Breast Implants USA. It is absolutely mandatory that all doctors listed on Breast Implants USA are Board Certified. Remember that Breast Implants USA is THE source for finding Board Certified Plastic Surgeons in your area.

Always Check for Board Certification!
One of the biggest dangers when considering plastic surgery has nothing to do with the procedures themselves. It's not being careful and educated about the procedure you're going into along with the doctor who is going to treat you. It's easy to neglect the research. You get a recommendation from a friend you trust, or you get a word of mouth reference and off you go without a second thought.
You should never go into any doctor blind, you should always do your research especially when it concerns your health and beauty. Because plastic surgery is an elective procedure and one that deals with your looks, it's easy for people to be timid and not ask around when doing research.
As reported by People and Fox News, Priscilla Presley released a statement in which she tells the story of how she was a victim of a fake plastic surgeon. Not only was he not Board Certified, he wasn't even a real doctor and he was using injectables that were unapproved by the FDA.
Board Certification is important not only because it sets up a standard of quality and care, but because it shows that the surgeon is dedicated to his or her craft. Anyone can be a plastic surgeon, not anyone can be board certified.
