Age Minimum Difference For Saline Vs. Silicone Breast Implants?
Why is the age minimum different for augmentation patients for saline-filled and silicone gel-filled breast implants?
The FDA approved saline-filled breast implants for augmentation in women ages 18 and older.
The FDA approved silicone gel-filled implants for women ages 22 and older.
The age restrictions are different because the risks are different for the two products. For example, silicone gel-filled implants will require frequent MRI monitoring to detect silent rupture (a rupture that can go undetected by you or your doctor). There is no risk of silent rupture for saline-filled implants. In addition, the health consequences of a ruptured saline-filled breast implant are different from those of a ruptured silicone gel-filled breast implant.

Breast Augmentation - Augmentation Mammoplasty
Breast augmentation is the name of the surgical procedure performed in order to enhance or enlarge a woman's breasts with the use of breast implants. It is also commonly referred to as Breast Implants Surgery and can be performed using saline or silicone breast implants, depending on the patients' desired look and feel.
Who Is An Ideal Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery?
There are many reasons why women consider breast augmentation surgery, ranging from the desire to have larger, more shapely breasts, to recovering breast shape and volume lost due to childbirth and age, to breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Candidates for breast augmentation are women who desire to enhance their body contour to fit their body shape, type and proportions. Breast augmentation may help a women to feel more self-confident about her body image.
Breast augmentation can also correct slightly sagging breasts or breasts that have lost volume due to pregnancy. The goal of surgery usually is to create a natural, fuller breast rather than one that appears "over augmented". Women that have a breast asymmetry, congenital abnormalities or have undergone a previous mastectomy may also be good candidates for breast augmentation, but may also require more specific procedures in conjunction with the breast augmentation surgery, such as the breast lift, breast reduction or breast implant re-visioning procedures.
Consult with your plastic surgeon to determine which procedure is right for you. If you don't have a breast implants surgeon, use the Surgeon Locator tool at Breast Implants USA to find a board certified breast implants surgeon in your area.

How will the FDA ensure that Allergan and Mentor complete their post-approval studies?
The FDA has been very careful in their decision to lift the ban on silicone breast implants and in order to further make sure that implant manufacturers follow through on the strict guidelines they have implemented a very detailed study post ban.
To assure that Mentor and Allergan (formerly Inamed) complete these studies, FDA will:
- Track the post-approval studies, using a new electronic tracking system
- Provide guidance on how and when companies should report the status of their post-approval studies
- Post the status of the studies on the FDA website to help keep the public informed
- Hold open public Panel meetings on the status of the conditions of approval five and 10 years after approval, as well as any other time the FDA decides is necessary (e.g., if significant new information from the post-approval studies becomes available)

Audio Interview with Dr. Peter Hyans on FDA Approval of Silicone Implants
The FDA caused quite a stir when they lifted the ban on silicone breast implants. With the approval nearing the one year mark, many women have flocked to the once ill conceived silicone breast implant over the widely used saline breast implant. However not all women are convinced on the relative safety of the silicone breast implant, with haunting memories of the controversies that plagued the implant, it is not hard to understand their hesitation regarding the silicone breast implant.
To help ease the transition Breast Implants USA conducted audio interviews with highly respected doctors and asked them what they thought of the approval of silicone breast implants.
Dr. Peter Hyans, a board-certified plastic surgeon has contributed many articles for medical journals, participated in local and national lectures specializing in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and can be found in the "How To Find the Best Doctors: New York Metro Area" published by Castle Connolly, this authoritative guide is crucial to finding highly qualified physicians throughout the region.
