Breast Augmentation Step Three: Surgery
One of the most important decisions to be made between you and your doctor is perhaps the location of the incision. No matter where the implant is located, it will be in a hidden area to minimize visible scarring and will mostly be determined by the type and size of the desired implant and your anatomical structure.
The implant is inserted through the incision and placed either:
- Under the breast muscle (sub muscular), or
- Behind the fatty tissue of the breast, over the breast muscle (sub glandular)
Silicone implants are inserted fully inflated, which oftentimes necessitates a larger incision, whereas the saline implant is inserted in a deflated state and then inflated after it has been placed in the breast pocket. Once the implant has been inserted and placed correctly, the incision is closed with layered sutures and surgical tape. You can expect the scars to completely heal and begin to disappear after six to eight months.
