Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic operations performed today. Some women who seek breast augmentation have small breasts and want to balance out their figures. Others have lost breast tissue through aging or childbirth, and some would like to correct breast asymmetry which may be congenital.

The Latest on Silicone Gel Breast Implants

Implant Styles (Shapes)
Breast implants differ in shape for a number of reasons. There is no “one-size-fits-all” rule nor is there “one shape fits all” rule in breast augmentation and reconstruction. For an example, Mentor and Inamed, the two leading breast implant manufacturers, offer smooth implants, textured implants, implants with different profiles (projection), volume adjustable implants, saline filled, silicone gel filled, and double-lumen saline/gel implants.

Silicone versus Saline Implants
I am seeing more patients in my cosmetic breast surgery practice who are inquiring about silicone breast implants. Silicone implants were popular in the 1970s and 1980s. The former generation of silicone implants had a more “runny” or less viscous gel and the implant shell was thinner.

Silicone Gel Breast Implants are FDA Approved
For years even the mention of silicone breast implants caused women everywhere to cringe. Many women may still remember when the FDA pulled silicone breast implants off the market because of their tendency to rupture. Now, after more than a decade, the FDA has APPROVED the use of gel filled silicone implants.

Silicone Gel Implants: An Early Update
As you probably already know, the FDA approved the return of silicone gel implants for general use for cosmetic breast augmentation this past November. Initially there was some reluctance on the part of our patients to consider this option over saline implants, but over the past few months the number of women choosing silicone has steadily increased.
